Schools
Twinning Project webpage
This project links students in Canada and Sierra Leone to learn about and address common issues. So far, six schools in the Paki Masabong and Gbonkolenken chiefdoms and about ten schools in Canada are involved. Information has been shared through letter-writing, slide-shows, video-taping cultural performances, and school presentations. See
the twinning page for more details.
You can view a short video on YouTube about some of the schools we are working with in Gbonkolenken Chiefdom created by Peaceful Schools International volunteer, Carolyn van Gurp.
CDPeace Construction
The Kamara family in Mayagba generously donated 23 acres of land for the construction of the cdpeace Centre. A community building management team has been established and plans are underway for construction, which will involve mostly local labour and materials. These photos were taken during the community meeting and celebration to formally hand over title of the land to cdpeace.
Mapaki Health Center
Staff at St. Martha's Hospital in Antigonish raised funds to rebuild the health centre at Mapaki and New Brunswick's Fundy Peace Foundation is helping to refurbish it.
School Rehabilitation
We are providing materials to schools in seven communities affected by the war. We are also seeking funds to allow us to work with communities to rebuild schools destroyed or damaged during the war.
Peace Education and Teacher Training
We will be hosting a Canadian teacher trainer who will work with teachers and students at seven schools in peace and basic education.
Women's Store
We will provide supports necessary to regenerate a women-run community store at Mapaki to provide the community with basic necessities, eliminate the need for community members to walk 7 miles to the closest market, and generate income for local development projects.
Library
In Mapaki we will build a library/resource centre for the community/schools which will be combined with a small guest house for visiting volunteers.
Agriculture and Adult Literacy
We are seeking funds to allow us to replace work-oxen sets and support functional literacy with women and men members of local agricultural groups.
